Perforated Ladle, Stainless and Beech

Most ladles pour. This one sprinkles.

A patch of small holes is drilled through the steel just below the cup's top edge. Tip it over the stones and the water leaves through the holes instead of falling in one stream, so it lands spread out across the rocks rather than in a single spot.

That changes what the room does next. A stream hits one place, boils off hard and fast, and you get a short violent burst of steam from a small patch of stone. Spread across the surface, the same water leaves more slowly and more evenly, and the heat that comes back up is softer and lasts longer. Whether that is what you want depends on the kind of bathing you like, and plenty of people prefer the hard burst. This is the tool for the other kind.

The cup is faceted stainless steel, straight-sided, and it sits on a long turned beech handle joined by a polished steel tube. The handle keeps your hand well back from the stones, which matters more with this than with a plain dipper because you hold it in place over the rocks while it drains rather than tipping and withdrawing.

Beech because it stays comfortable to hold in a hot room. Steel because it does not care how hot the room gets.
