Water on hot stones is the whole event. Everything else in the room is staging for that one moment.
This is what carries it. A stave-built pail finished in deep black, nine litres, wide and shallow so a ladle drops in flat and comes up full instead of scraping a narrow bottom. The staves are fitted so the grain runs vertical the whole way around, the way a cooper would do it, and the rim is chamfered so it does not bite into your hand when you lift.
The handle is the part people notice. Instead of a bail that swings over the opening and sits in the way of the ladle, a single arm rises from one side and runs flat and straight across the top. Lift it, set it down, and reach straight into the water without moving anything out of the way.
The black stain is thin enough that the grain still reads through it. Against pale cedar walls it draws the eye and holds it.
