A panel of aspen is shaped into a long S contour: it stands proud at the top, hollows through the middle where your lower back wants support, and flares forward again at the foot.
The curve is not styling. It puts wood where your spine is not, so the pressure lands on the parts of your back that can carry it. The difference shows up in the second round, when you would otherwise be shifting around hunting for an angle that does not dig in.
Aspen takes the heat and the damp without complaint. The face is left smooth with fine grain running the full height, and every edge is rounded, because in a hot room you find the sharp ones with your shoulder blades.
